In rare cases, it is necessary to carry out what is known as early orthodontic treatment as early as the age of 6, for example in the case of
- significant misalignment of the teeth and jaws
- harmful habits such as persistent thumb-sucking
- premature loss of milk teeth
The orthodontist at Zahninsel recommends a so-called space maintainer if your child loses a tooth – for example, due to tooth decay – before the natural tooth replacement process begins. The brace keeps the gap open for the permanent tooth that will eventually come through and ensures that the bite remains correct.
Your orthodontist can make the most of your child’s growth phase to reduce the risk of misalignment.
Many children choose a particular sport whilst at primary school. To prevent injuries to the jaw or teeth, a professional mouthguard is an essential piece of kit for certain high-risk sports such as hockey, ice hockey or handball. It protects the teeth from accidents and thus from pain and costly consequential damage.
A custom-made face mask does not feel tight and causes hardly any discomfort when speaking or drinking.
During adolescence, it is important to check whether wisdom teeth are present. If so, it must be assessed whether there is sufficient space for them in the jaw. If this is not the case, removal is often recommended, as problems may otherwise arise in the long term. We provide personalised advice.
There is an ideal time window for the straightforward extraction of wisdom teeth: they are no longer embedded too deeply in the bone and root growth has not yet progressed very far.
In the event that your fixed or removable braces are causing discomfort, trouble or even break, we have put together a few tips to help you manage until your appointment at our practice; after all, these emergencies usually happen outside of consultation hours.
As a general rule, if you experience any problems or have any concerns regarding your braces, you should book an emergency appointment with us at the practice straight away.
The brackets are firmly bonded to the surface of the teeth; this means that the enamel beneath the bracket is completely covered and cannot be colonised by plaque. At check-up appointments, the orthodontist at Zahninsel checks whether the brackets are still securely in place and re-adheres them if necessary. However, during treatment with a multi-bracket appliance, oral hygiene is made slightly more difficult by the brackets and wires. It is important that the care advice we give our patients is followed.
As a precautionary measure, we recommend that you have your teeth professionally cleaned regularly whilst undergoing orthodontic treatment.
