Caring for and brushing children’s teeth properly with fluoride
For parents and children, the first baby teeth are a special moment and a milestone on the journey to growing up. Now is the time to start brushing teeth properly from the moment the first milk tooth appears!
The reason: even though the last milk teeth fall out at around the age of 11 to 14, they lay the foundation for healthy permanent teeth completely free from tooth decay.
Here’s how you, as parents, can help ensure your children’s teeth are looked after properly:
We paediatric dentists recommend brushing teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste to ensure the best possible protection against tooth decay from the moment the first milk tooth appears. In that case, special fluoride tablets – that is, systemic fluoride supplementation – are usually not necessary, as fluoride is most effective when applied directly to the tooth surface.

Brushing your teeth starts with the first tooth / fluoride
For the first milk teeth, we recommend special children’s manual toothbrushes with extra-soft bristles, such as Oral-B Stages. Children’s toothbrushes are available in a wide range of bright colours and for every age group. Until your child’s second birthday, their teeth should be brushed twice a day using a fluoride-containing children’s toothpaste. For babies and toddlers, a rice-grain-sized amount of children’s toothpaste is sufficient. In very rare cases, additional fluoride tablets may be advisable – we would be happy to advise you, as parents, on this at our paediatric dental practice.
Toothbrushing lessons (personalised preventive care)
At the Zahninsel Toothbrushing School, our young patients are welcome to bring their own electric toothbrushes so that we can practise the correct brushing technique together using the toothbrush they’re used to.
