A professional dental clean removes all plaque!

Professional teeth cleaning / tartar

Just like daily tooth brushing, regular professional dental cleaning at the paediatric dentist is an essential part of optimal dental care, even for milk teeth. This type of cleaning is called ‘professional’ because it is carried out only by specially trained dental hygienists using specialised cleaning brushes and pastes.

Why is professional teeth cleaning important for children?

Even if teeth are brushed regularly and thoroughly at home, bacterial plaque can build up that cannot be removed with a toothbrush. It accumulates in areas of the teeth that are difficult to reach, such as the so-called cervical region – that is, where the tooth meets the gum – or below the gum line.

Mineral deposits from saliva cause this plaque to harden, much like tartar. If you run your tongue over your teeth, they feel rough. New bacteria then attach themselves to these rough surface deposits – increasing the risk of tooth decay.

To keep teeth healthy, during professional dental cleaning we remove plaque using child-friendly polishing brushes and toothpastes that taste of strawberry, mint or melon – and polish the little teeth until they are sparkling white again.

How often should you have your teeth professionally cleaned?

To keep your child’s risk of tooth decay as low as possible, a professional dental clean is usually sufficient twice a year. How often your child should have a professional dental cleaning depends on their individual risk of tooth decay. For children at increased risk of tooth decay – for example, those wearing fixed braces – we recommend professional dental cleaning four times a year. We will, of course, inform you, as parents, about this at our paediatric dental practice.
