By sealing fissures, we reduce the surface area available for bacteria to attack!
Dental sealants – protection for healthy children’s teeth
To prevent tooth decay from forming in the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the molars, we, as your children’s dentists, recommend dental sealants, also known as fissure sealants. As these chewing surfaces provide many nooks and crannies for bacteria, they are generally more difficult to clean than the incisors. We also refer to these grooves as ‘fissures’. As they are very difficult to reach with a toothbrush, bacteria and food debris can accumulate here. The result: the tooth enamel is attacked by acids secreted by the bacteria, leading to tooth decay.

Why is it a good idea to have a child’s milk teeth sealed by a paediatric dentist?
Depending on the condition of the chewing surfaces of your child’s teeth, your paediatric dentist in Munich may recommend sealants for milk teeth. When applying sealants to molars, we fill the grooves with a special, light-curing plastic material. The sealants help to smooth out uneven tooth surfaces, with the aim of reducing the areas susceptible to tooth decay and making it easier to clean the teeth with a toothbrush. Fissure sealing provides effective protection for many years and is completely painless.
During your first visit to us at Zahninsel, following a detailed assessment of your child’s risk of tooth decay, we will discuss with your paediatric dentist whether and when fissure sealing is recommended for your child, and whether sealants for milk teeth may already be indicated.
